The Canadian education system is very special ! Provincial and territorial governments are responsible for education. They design their courses according to very rigorous standards and quality assurance criteria.
Different Diplomas & Credentials in Canada are :
- Secondary studies
→ General secondary school diploma: DES or 12th grade :
→ Vocational secondary school diploma: DEP, ASP, etc.
- Higher education is also divided into 3 cycles :
→ 1st Cycle : Baccalaureate, Certificate, Bachelor, College diplomas such as DEC…
→ 2nd Cycle : Maîtrise, Masters, DESS, Graduate Diploma /Certificate….
→ 3rd Cycle : Doctorate with the possibility of doing postdoctoral studies after the 3rd cycle.
The education system in English-speaking Canada is similar to that of the United States. They are divided into two cycles:
- Undergraduate cycle
→ Certificate: One-year training in a college;
→ Diploma: 2 years in a college or institute of technology
→ Bachelor: 3 to 4 years in a college, an institute of technology or a university.
- Graduate cycle
→ Master: Prepared in 1 to 2 years;
→ Doctorate (Phd): Prepared in 3 years minimum.
The organization of the education system in Quebec is specific and different from English-speaking Canada.
- CEGEP
In Quebec, all students who plan to continue their studies must go through a CEGEP (College of General and Professional Education). Two ways are possible:
→ Technical: Short and professional studies leading to the DEC (Diploma of Collegial Studies) Technical (3 years);
→ Pre-university: A must for those planning to continue their studies at university. It leads to the Pre-university Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC) (2 years).
- University
University studies lead to a “Bachelor” degree in 3 years (4 years in some), a specialized higher education diploma “DESS” in 1 year, a master’s degree in 2 years and/or a doctorate ( PhD) in 3 additional years.
Canadian educational institutions generally offer three admissions sessions:
- Fall session: Begins in September and is the most known;
- Winter session: Generally, begins in January;
- Summer session: usually starts in May and is not offered by all institutions;
It is always advisable to start your procedures within 6 months of the desired session.

Canadian Study permit
To be able to inter and live in Canada as an international student, you will need a study permit, also known as a “Canadian student visa”. The study permit is compulsory for any training longer than 6 months.
To apply for a study permit in Canada, you must :
- Have and justify a coherent study project ;
- Hold admission to a designated educational institution ;
- Prove that you are able to finance your studies;
- Obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) If you plan to attend an institution in Quebec ;
- Assure the immigration officer of your departure from Canada, once your studies are completed.
